My interpretation of a Vermont Legend with a pair of moose and a hermit thrush.

The moss covered rock in this photo bears the inscription which local legend has dubbed Lovers Lament.

In the painting I have attempted to diminish the words chiseled in the stone such that for those not interested in the legend it is just a moose painting but for the history buff it is very readable and says:
IN MEMORYOF STEPHEN P. TRUESDELL WHEN SUCH SAD SCENES.THE.BOSOM.PAIN WHAT EYS. FROM.WEEPING.CAN. REFRAIN followed by CUPID X VENUS (are there hidden clues as to the time period etc in the use of dots rather than spaces and the misspelled word?)

The legend as I was told was that this guy having been jilted by a lover chiseled the poem before hanging himself, however, when visiting the site I was shown a second rock (see the owl painting) and on it is the inscription "In memory of SPT" which is the stone I think he carved. His friends honored him by carving the poem on the larger stone.

I have located a SP Truesdell from Vermont on the internet who was a Civil War veteran and who never collected any of his pension and wonder if that may be him.

Should any one have updates on this bit of history I would appreciate hearing from you.
